Application:
For the prevention and treatment of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis) with a duration of effect of 7 and 8 months. The efficacy against fleas begins immediately after application of the collar. The product prevents the development of flea larvae in the immediate vicinity of the animal for 8 months.
Seresto can be applied as part of a treatment strategy for flea bites triggered by allergic dermatitis (flea allergy dermatitis, FAD).
The product has a persistent acaricidal (killing) effect in tick infestations with mites and ticks (wood tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), Dermacentor reticulatus (swamp tick), and repellent (anti-feeding = preventive blood meal) effect in tick infestations with mites and ticks and Rhipicephalus sanguineus with a duration of 8 months. The product is effective against larvae, nymphs and adult ticks.
It is possible that ticks already present on the dog at the time of treatment are not killed within the first 48 hours after applying the collar and remain attached and visible. Therefore, if ticks already located at the time of treatment on the dog, they should be removed. Protection from attacks by new ticks begins within two days after applying the collar.
For the treatment against biting lice (Trichodectes canis).
Ideally, the collar should be applied before flea or tick season.
effect:
Both active substances are slowly and uniformly released at low concentrations from the polymer matrix system of the collar to the animal. Both ingredients are present in insecticidal and acaricidal concentrations during the period of efficacy in the animal's fur. The active substances diffuse from the point of direct contact over the entire surface of the skin. Tolerance studies in the target animal and serum kinetic studies showed that imidacloprid was temporarily taken up systemically, while flumethrine was mostly not measurable. Oral administration of the two active substances is insignificant for a clinical efficacy.
The effectiveness against fleas begins immediately after applying the collar.
In addition to the applications described above, efficacy against the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) and the human flea (Pulex irritans) could be detected. The product has repellent (anti-feeding = blood meal preventing) properties against those ticks. In this way the foiled parasite is prevented, to bite and suck blood and it indirectly helped the risk of transmission of vector-borne infections diseases (vector-borne diseases – VBDS) to reduce. In addition to the applications listed above, efficacy against Ixodes hexagonus, I. scapularis and the non-spreading in Europe tick species Dermacentor variabilis and the Australian, tick paralysis-inducing type I. holocyclus has been shown.
The collars were able to improve a Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in pre-infested dogs, after three months a complete cure was achieved.
Contraindications:
Do not use in puppies under 7 weeks of age.
Do not apply in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any of the excipients.
Side effects:
Occasionally, mild itching and/or redness may occur in animals in the first few days after applying the collar, who are not used to wearing collars. Care should be taken to ensure that the collar is not applied too tightly.
Patchy hair loss and minor skin reactions may occur to the collar at the application site, which usually subside within 1 to 2 weeks without the collar needing to be removed again. In some cases, it is recommended to temporarily remove the collar until the symptoms have subsided.
If you notice any side effects, especially those not listed in the package leaflet for your pet, please inform your veterinarian or pharmacist.
Dosage for each species, type and method of administration:
Small dogs up to 8 kg body weight (bw) received a necklace with a length of 38 cm.
Dogs over 8 kg body weight (BW) received a necklace with a length of 70 cm.
For application to the skin. An animal collar to secure around the neck. For external use only.
Instructions for correct use:
Remove the collar immediately before applying the protective sheath.
Unroll the collar and make sure there are no plastic compound residues inside the collar.
Place the tape around the animal's neck, but do not tighten it (Note: you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and the neck).
Pull the protruding end of the collar through the eyelets and cut off any excess length of more than 2cm.
The collar should be worn continuously for the 8 months of protection and should be removed after the treatment period. At uniform intervals the collar should be checked and the size, if necessary, adjusted, especially in rapidly growing puppies.
Special warnings:
Special warnings for each target species:
Ticks are usually killed and dropped within 24 to 48 hours after infection of the host animal, and without receiving a blood meal. The attachment of individual ticks after treatment cannot be ruled out. For this reason, under unfavorable conditions, a transmission of infectious agents by ticks cannot be completely ruled out.
As with all long-term topical medications, it may in phases with severe seasonal hair loss, resulting from the loss of hair bound in this agent, a slight decrease in effectiveness. Delivery of the agent through the collar begins immediately so that full effectiveness without additional treatment or replacement of the collar is restored.
For optimal control of the flea problem in heavily infested households, it may be necessary to treat the environment with a suitable insecticide.
Special precautions for use in animals:
The product is water resistant. Even if the animal gets wet, it retains its effectiveness. However, prolonged and intensive wetting and thorough soaping should be avoided, as the duration of action of the product can be shortened. Studies have shown that monthly shampooing or immersion in water did not significantly reduce the activity of 8 months against ticks after re-distribution of the active ingredient in the coat, while the effectiveness against fleas, starting from the 5th month, gradually decreased.
Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or egg-laying:
Laboratory studies with either imidacloprid or flumethrine in rats and rabbits have shown no effect on fertility, reproduction, teratogenicity or fetotoxicity. There have been no safety studies for use of the product in the target species during pregnancy and lactation. The product cannot be recommended for pregnant and lactating females.
Overdose:
Due to the nature of the collar overdose is unlikely and signs of overdose are not expected. In case of overdose from 5 collars applied simultaneously over a period of 8 months in adult dogs and 6 months to 7 weeks of age puppies, no other side effects were observed except slight hair loss and mild skin reactions.
In the unlikely event that the animal receives the collar, mild gastrointestinal intolerances (e.g. loose stools) may occur.
Special user precautions:
The bag is left with the necklace until use in the package.
As with all veterinary medicines, children should not be allowed to play with the collar or take it in their mouths. Pets wearing a collar should not be allowed to sleep in the same bed as their owners. This is especially true for children.
Persons with known Überempfindlicheit in the ingredients of the collar should avoid contact with the collar. Possible radicals or cut parts of the collar should be discarded immediately (see section Dosage for each species, type and method of administration). Wash hands after applying the tape with cold water.
