Vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) helps maintain bones
Vitamin K2 in the form of menaquinone-7 originally comes from fermented nutrients. An example of this is natto, a typical Japanese food product made from fermented soybeans (with Bacillus subtilis natto). Natto is naturally rich in vitamin K2, especially menaquinone-7.
Other bacteria, such as Bacillus licheniformis, can also produce larger amounts of vitamin K2. This natural form of vitamin K2 is highly bioavailable, stays in the body much longer, and has a stronger effect than other forms of vitamin K2.
Vitamin K is important for blood clotting, but recent findings show that vitamin K is just as important as vitamin D for maintaining normal bone structure, and this is true for both young and old. In addition, vitamin K, especially vitamin K2, performs several other functions important to normal physiology.
